A fragrance video
with no shoot

The act invited creators to pitch ideas in Threads. A scent can't be shown, so I showed what БАБА smells of: five scenes, from frost to home. The video was generated in Seedance, the voice in ElevenLabs, and everything else was built in the edit and in code.

How it was built ↓

How generation becomes a video

Scroll: the scene on the left rebuilds step by step, in the order I worked.

Labels in Russian, as in the original video.

  1. 01 / 08 · Generation

    15 seconds, no titles

Five scenes from Seedance. Beautiful, but not a video yet: there is no rhythm, and the eye doesn't know where to look.

  2. 02 / 08 · Rhythm

    The voice sets the rhythm

Each scene is stretched to fit its phrase. Cuts sit in the pauses and on strong beats of the music, and each scene speeds up into the cut.

  3. 03 / 08 · Type and colour

    Everything comes from the bottle

The logo is set in a thin high-contrast serif, so the key word runs in thin italics and the line in caps. The colours go around the colour wheel from the red bottle toward the warm side.

  4. 04 / 08 · Karaoke

Each word lights up with the voice

Every word appears exactly when it is spoken. The timings come from speech recognition and were checked by hand.

  5. 05 / 08 · Honey

    Text flows like honey

Letters appear behind a top-to-bottom wipe with a viscous slowdown. The text moves the way the thing it talks about moves.

  6. 06 / 08 · Focus

    Focus leads the eye

The sharp spot travels from the heroine's face to the bottle, and the title sharpens with it. The frame itself leads the viewer to the product.

  7. 07 / 08 · Cap

The word sits behind the bottle

The cap is tracked in each of the 268 frames of the finale and sits over the word. The product stands in front of the text and stays the main thing.

  8. 08 / 08 · Final

    24 seconds, one bottle

The crunch of snow, a drop of honey, the crackle of wax, the ring of glass and the breath after "blown out": I built these sounds in code. The voice is louder than the music, and the music ducks under it.

What this gives a brand

  • 01

No studio, no props, no film crew

  • 02

The video speaks the brand's language: type, colour and rhythm come from the product

  • 03

The product is at the centre of every scene: the edit leads the viewer's eye
